Village straight out of huge TV show offers 'picture perfect' setting

If autumn leaves you yearning for a countryside stroll surrounded by nature, this charming townnestled in the Holme Valley provides the ideal getaway.

Famed for its breathtaking vistas across Yorkshire, Holmfirth is a bustling town packed with year-round events and endless attractions to discover. Those unfamiliar with the location may be surprised to learn they've already glimpsed it from their living rooms whilst watching the beloved sitcom Last of the Summer Wine.

The town serves as the setting for the characters' adventures and consequently attracts devotees of the programme, eager to step into its fictional universe. Yet it's entirely authentic, enveloped by verdant countryside, positioned merely six miles south of Huddersfield and 14 miles west of Barnsley.

Indeed, Holmfirth features an exhibition devoted exclusively to the celebrated series. One visitor shared their thoughts on TripAdvisor, noting: "The building itself is Compo's house from the series, which is extra special; there are lots of memories, pictures and extras from episodes from the show. The visit brought back many childhood memories of something I used to enjoy watching. Well worth a visit, and you have Nora Batty's house above to grab a photo on the steps."

Situated merely two miles from the Peak District National Park's boundary, Holmfirth naturally attracts enthusiastic ramblers and walkers who frequently pass through the town as a perfect stopping point.

The renowned Holmfirth Circular trail begins in the town centre, winding through the picturesque Hope Valley before returning to Holmfirth's charming cobbled streets.

The stunning circular route takes approximately two to two and a half hours to finish, boasting an impressive 4.6 rating amongst experienced walkers. Spanning roughly 7.2km in total, the walk is considered suitable for people of all fitness levels.

The town's very own vineyard proves a major attraction, offering several hours of wine sampling and selection. Holmfirth Vineyard provides guests with guided tours explaining the entire wine production process, culminating in tastings of multiple wines produced on site.

Alternatively, many visitors simply call in for a delightful breakfast whilst admiring views across the Yorkshire countryside. One visitor commented on TripAdvisor: "Spent the day at Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, and what an experience!

"We were treated to a fascinating insight into the history of the business; it's amazing to see the passion and dedication that goes into every bottle.

"The wine tasting was a treat, and it all wrapped up beautifully with a delicious Sunday dinner!". While another added: "The view on arriving was spectacular, and afternoon tea was delightful and filling. The wine tour and tasting were interesting, knowledgeable and entertaining; we all enjoyed it."

Holmfirth is renowned for its annual festivities, including the Holmfirth Film Festival, which showcases an array of films from local to international cinema. In addition to this, the town hosts an annual Arts Festival and a community market that operates on both Thursdays and Sundays.
