What is the 'bird theory'?: New relationship test going viral among couples and why it matters

If your partner told you that they saw a bird, then how you respond could be a deciding factor in your relationship. The warm-blooded and feathered beings have become a trending topic on social media reels, helping people, largely women, decide if their partner is interested in their life.

What is the bird theory test?
In the trend, women record themselves telling their romantic partner about a bird they saw outside, in an attempt to gauge their interest level in a casual conversation.

The purpose, as per a social media user, is "to see if they’ll be interested and ask about something you saw even if it’s stupid like just an ordinary bird."

Those who passed typically engaged in the conversation, asking follow-up questions about the bird or offering their comments whereas others seemed the least bit interested in the event.

In its essence, the theory helps you test the overall affection or care your partner has for you.

An influencer Veena Jetti, who has 41.5K views tried the theory on her husband who passed with flying colours, even receiving a comment from the Gottman Institute itself.

A therapist's view of the bird theory
Vanessa Milagros, licensed mental health counsellor explained the science behind the theory in a TikTok video, saying: "It's not about the bird, it's about being seen."

While it might be hypothetical, it is based on actual psychology. It refers to what psychologists call " bids for connection ." It is a concept developed by American relationship researchers Dr John and Julie Gottman of the Gottman Institute and posits that relationships are built on small, everyday efforts to connect emotionally.

This means the ability to share small and seemingly unimportant details from the day such as a funny meme. While this might be a small thing, it fosters a sense of connection, trust, and emotional safety in the relationship.

Should you try it?
According to the counsellor, while the experiment might be fun and interesting, it should not be conducted with the intention of keeping a score. Your partner can't always be locked in and focused. Even if they fail the test, recount the previous instances where they have actively participated in conversations and made you feel seen and heard.

Keep social media trends as something you can try your hand at, not the fate of your relationship. In the end, they pass on with a scroll but love doesn't.
