Office Romance India on Second Globally: Nowadays our office has become a very important part of our life. It is important to have good relations with colleagues for good teamwork and better performance at work. But many times, this beginning of friendship turns into a romantic relationship. A new international survey regarding ‘office romance’ has revealed shocking results, which point towards a major change in the modern Indian work culture.

India’s position in office romance

A survey conducted by Ashley Madison and YouGov, an international dating platform, on 13,581 adults from 11 countries has revealed that India ranks second in the world in terms of office romance.

40% Indians accepted office romance

According to the survey, 40% of Indians have admitted that they have either dated a colleague in the past or are currently in an office relationship. This number shows that despite professional boundaries, office romance has become a common thing in India.

India after Mexico

Mexico tops the list, where 43% people have admitted to office romance. India comes immediately behind with 40%. On the other hand, in western countries like America, Britain and Canada this figure is around 30%. This comparison clearly shows that in countries like India and Mexico the boundaries between work and personal life are slightly less rigid.

Men are ahead of women and young people are more alert

A big difference was also seen in the results of the survey on the basis of gender. 51% of men admitted that they have had a romantic relationship with a co-worker. In comparison, this figure is 36% among women.

One of the main reasons women say for staying away from office romance is the fear of negative impact on their career. 29% of women did this out of fear while this number among men is 27%. Interestingly, the younger generation i.e. employees aged 18-24 appeared to be the most alert. 34% of youth in this age group fear that a romantic relationship could harm their career. This shows that today’s Gen Z employees are more aware of office romance.

Changes in thinking and challenges

Experts believe that this high ranking of India reflects the changing views in the society and the growing feeling of accepting non-traditional relationships. Another survey also found that 35% of Indians are currently in an ‘open relationship’.

Impact at work and company policies

Although office romance is becoming common, it also creates many challenges. If this relationship breaks down, it can have a direct impact on the work environment and teamwork. In view of this, many companies are now implementing strict rules.

Romantic relationships between bosses and their subordinates are being banned. Professional boundaries are being clearly laid down in human resources (HR) policies. Despite these policies, many people are unable to control their emotions and ignore the rules, creating new complications in the workplace.

Overall, this survey makes it clear that office romance has become a strong trend in India, which is changing the workplace culture. While it can create deeper connections between people, it is important for both employees and companies to understand and manage its professional and personal risks.
