The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single-largest party in Bihar as it won or was leading in 89 seats, as votes for the state Assembly elections are being counted on Friday.
As of 8.50 pm, the party had won 81 seats and was leading in eight of the 101 constituencies it contested. This is one of the best performances of the BJP in the state.
In 2020, the BJP had won 74 seats, in 2015 it won 53, in 2010 the tally was 91 and in 2005 it was 37.
The BJP is part of the National Democratic Alliance, which also includes Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), Union minister Chirag Paswan’s faction of the Lok Janshakti Party, the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and the Hindustani Awam Morcha.
The NDA is ahead of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan in 202 of 243 seats.

Among the alliance partners, the JD(U) has won 72 seats and is leading in 13. The Lok Janshakti Party has won 17 and is leading in two. The Hindustani Awam Morcha has won five seats while the Rashtriya Lok Morcha had won three seats and was ahead on one.
A party or an alliance needs 122 seats in the 243-member Assembly to form the government.
