Since Phumdi is constantly moving, the entire livelihood of the people here is based on natural resources. Fisherman is the main occupation of most of them. Only lake water is used for drinking water, which is purified by alum and natural methods. The food also includes a large amount of fish. A bio-digester system is used for toilets, thus avoiding water pollution.

There are about five hundred houses and around two thousand people live in this village. ‘Champu Khangpok’ has received the status of a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. As it is a wetland instead of land, water is always spread over the land. Humid is a thick, dense, mat-like structure made up of aquatic plants, soil layers and organic matter. It looks like land from above, but because it floats on water, it remains constant. Plants that grow on this hummock are best suited for growing in silty, wet soils.
