England fast bowler Mark Wood has been cleared of any hamstring injury after a brief scare during the team’s only warm-up match at Lilac Hill ahead of the Ashes 2025-26 opener. With the first Test in Perth just days away, the 35-year-old’s fitness update is expected to boost England’s pace plans.

Wood, returning to competitive cricket after nearly nine months on the sidelines due to knee surgery, featured in the warm-up clash against the England Lions. He bowled two short spells on Thursday, bowling at a good pace on a flat surface, but later experienced stiffness in his left hamstring.

The discomfort forced him to walk off the field, leading to immediate precautionary scans and triggering concerns within the England camp. With England already dealing with several injury setbacks this year, Wood’s scare raised concerns about their attack heading into the marquee series. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Saturday that the scans had cleared Wood of any injury concerns. 

“Following precautionary scans on Friday, England fast bowler Mark Wood has been cleared of any concerns regarding his left hamstring,” the England Cricket Board said.

Although Wood has been ruled fit, England will not risk him on the final day of the warm-up match. He is expected to resume training as planned and continue his preparation for the first Test starting November 21 in Perth. Before leaving the field, Wood bowled eight overs. His return will be especially crucial at the fast, bouncy Optus Stadium wicket.

Meanwhile, Wood’s injury history remains a factor in England’s approach. Earlier this year, he underwent knee surgery after suffering an injury during the ICC Champions Trophy in February. A setback during his recovery forced him to miss the entire home Test summer, including the crucial series against India.

The warm-up match also provided additional positives for England. Ben Stokes, returning to bowling duties, claimed six wickets. Ollie Pope smashed a century at No. 3, strengthening his position in the Test XI. England’s pace attack for the Ashes will feature Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Matt Potts, Brydon Carse, and skipper Stokes, all in contention. Wood’s presence will add the much-needed X-factor.
