15 Nov 2025
Indian captain Shubman Gill has retired hurt during the ongoing first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The incident occurred on Day 2 of the match when Gill suffered a neck strain while batting.
He had just come to bat after Washington Sundar's dismissal in the 35th over and looked comfortable initially.
However, things took a turn for the worse after he played a well-timed sweep shot off Simon Harmer's bowling.

Injury details
After playing the sweep shot, Gill showed signs of discomfort as he got up.
He took off his helmet and held his neck with his left hand, indicating that he was in pain.
After a brief pause, he called for the physio who assessed him on-field. Notably, he faced just three balls during his stay.
India decided not to take any chances with their captain and sent in a replacement batter while Gill walked back slowly toward the pavilion.

Replacement impact
Gill's exit from the field led to Rishabh Pant coming out to bat for the first time since the Oval Test.
The Indian dressing room saw a lot of movement as medical staff and support personnel rushed in and out to handle the situation.
While Gill went straight inside for treatment, his exit briefly disrupted India's early momentum at a time when they were looking to settle in with India at 79/2.
