Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the ongoing first Test between India and South Africa, being played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The India captain had experienced neck pain while batting on the second day that also forced him to retire himself and walk back to the dressing room with just three balls into his stay at the crease.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India made an official update regarding his injury. Meanwhile, the Indian team will be led by interim skipper Rishabh Pant in the absence of Gill. The team management has further confirmed that Gill will be under the strict observation of the BCCI's medical staff at Kolkata's Woodlands Hospital, but won't be able to take any part in the remainder of the Test match.

He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” BCCI said in an official statement ahead of Day 3's play.
At the end of Day 2's play, the South Africans were 93 for the loss of seven wickets in their second innings. They currently lead by 63 runs, with skipper Temba Bavuma batting alongside Corbin Bosch at the crease. For India, Ravindra Jadeja has been the pick of the bowlers, having taken four wickets already. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has also contributed with a couple of wickets to his name in the second innings.
The Indians will be hoping to wrap up the Proteas unit as early as possible on the third day to minimize their target on a dry and a tricky surface at the Eden Gardens. Bavuma, on the other hand, will look to resume the third day with determination to prolong the game by as much as he can with support from tail-enders.
