Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Senne Lammens' displays as "outstanding" and backed the Belgian to enjoy a bright future at Old Trafford after establishing himself as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper. The shot-stopper has recently broken into the side following his summer arrival as a relatively unknown prospect.
The goalkeeping position has proved problematic for United over recent seasons, with Andre Onana failing to win over supporters during his two-year spell. He was, rather unexpectedly, permitted to depart on loan and moved to Turkey in the summer. Altay Bayindir had been filling in but struggled to deliver, prompting the club to secure Lammens in an £18million transfer from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.
The Belgian made his debut against Sunderland, recording a clean sheet, and also played a key role in a memorable triumph over Liverpool, with United currently enjoying a five-match unbeaten streak that has lifted them up the standings.
Ferguson told Raceday RTV: "Well, they are, the signs... the manager has had some good signs. Particularly the goalkeeper has been outstanding, he's only played three or four games and he's looking really good."
"Of course, Mbeumo and Cunha, the new players from Wolves and Brentford, they've added to it. I hope the manager gets a bit of success because at United you need to have success. The signs are getting better.
"I think back-to-back wins is something teams like United should always expect. But having gone through a cycle where the improvement has to come by waiting and being patient, they are enjoying it now."
Lammens had featured in only 52 matches in Belgium's top flight prior to his switch to English football, yet Ruben Amorim has demonstrated tremendous confidence in the 23-year-old, who has appeared composed and reliable in defence.
Ferguson himself benefited from two world-class shot-stoppers throughout his illustrious reign. Peter Schmeichel became a masterstroke acquisition upon his arrival in England, whilst Edwin van der Sar formed the foundation of his triumphs in the latter stages.
The legendary Scot brought in David de Gea just before stepping down in 2013. The Spanish international served as first-choice goalkeeper for over ten years, claiming an unprecedented four Player of the Year accolades, though he departed in 2023 following the expiry of his deal, with Onana recruited as his successor.
