In one of the scariest moments to imagine, a cyber expert has claimed that more than 183 million passwords were stolen in a data breach.

According to the Daily Mail, Troy Hunt, an Australian cyber expert, revealed the incident and called it a ‘vast corpus’ of breached data. He says a data breach of the size 3.5 terrabytes has occurred. Not just Gmail, other major providers like Yahoo, Outlook and others are present in the list of breached emails.

The breached data contained 183 million unique email addresses alongside the websites they were entered into and the passwords used, Daily Mail reported.

In light of the data breach claims, here are 5 ways in which you can ensure your email is protected.

Use a unique and strong password: Ensure the password does not contain personal details and has a mix of uppercase, lowercase, and special characters.

Enable two-step verification: This adds an extra layer of protection beyond the password.

Review account activity: Check the devices and locations where the mail has been signed in. If any unfamiliarity is found, sign out immediately.

Ignore phishing emails: Do not open or click links from unknown senders unless you are convinced.

Avoid using public Wi-Fi: Public internet networks can be insecure. If you must use them, connect via a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
