IND vs SA: Shubman Gill Discharged From Kolkata Hospital, India Captain's Availability In Guwahati Test Remains Uncertain - Report

India vs South Africa: Days after sustaining a neck injury, India captain Shubman Gill was discharged from the Kolkata hospital on Sunday, November 16.

According to a report from Sangbad Pratidin, Shubman Gill’s condition has improved compared to yesterday, leading to his release from the Kolkata hospital. But still, the 26-year-old's availability in the Guwahati Test remains uncertain.

Sourav Ganguly Meets Shubman Gill In Kolkata Hospital 

According to a report from the Bengali media outlet, Shubman Gill was taken to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15, after experiencing discomfort in his neck.

The report also stated that the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, Sourav Ganguly, visited the hospital to meet Gill after the conclusion of the first Test match of the series between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens.

Ganguly spent about 10 to 15 minutes speaking with Gill, and later met the hospital doctors to get updates on the Indian captain’s injury.

Will Shubman Gill Take Part In Guwahati Test? Gautam Gambhir Opens Up

Earlier on Sunday, November 16, India head coach Gautam Gambhir announced that Gill's availability in the Guwahati Test will be decided on Monday, November 17.

"He's still being assessed. So, let's see. The physios will take a call this evening, and we'll take a call tomorrow," Gautam Gambhir said while speaking at the post-match press conference, as quoted by ANI.

On Day 2 at Eden Gardens, during the third ball of the 35th over, Shubman Gill stepped in to replace Washington Sundar and immediately showcased intent with a sweeping boundary. However, the aggressive stroke came at a cost. Moments after the shot, Gill clutched his neck in visible discomfort, appearing to be in severe pain. Medical staff rushed onto the field, but the Indian captain was unable to carry on and had to retire hurt.

Later, on Saturday, November 15, the BCCI issued a statement confirming Gill’s injury. They noted that the medical team is keeping a close watch on his condition, with a decision regarding his further participation in the match to be taken at a later stage.

"Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress," BCCI stated.

Shubman Gill made his Test debut in 2020 against Australia in Melbourne. The 26-year-old played 39 Tests and 72 innings, scoring 2839 runs at a strike rate of 61.45 and an average of 43.01. He scored 10 centuries and eight fifties.
