Shubman Gill Out of South Africa Tests Due to Neck Injury? India Coach Provides Much-Needed Update Amid Kolkata Game

Ind vs SA: India captain Shubman Gill picked up an injury on Saturday during the 1st Test versus South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He was hurt while trying to slog-sweep Simon Harmer. Despite hitting that ball for a boundary, he seemed to be in immense pain. Straightaway Gill signaled for help to the dressing-room, realising something was wrong. 

He was soon provided medical attention, but he was certain he could not continue anymore and hence left the field. The images that surfaced on social space just after the injury sparked concern among fans. Soon, the Indian board provided an update on Gill. BCCI confirmed he was suffering from a neck spasm and remained under close medical supervision.

Gill's Injury UPDATE

India's assistant coach Morne Morkel revealed that it is yet to be detected what it causing the pain for Gill. Morkel claimed that Gill's issue could merely be due to bad sleep. He also admitted that Gill manages his fitness well. 

“We need to understand how it started. It could simply be a bad night’s sleep,” Morkel said, downplaying fears of overload. “Gill manages his fitness extremely well. This was unfortunate timing more than anything.”

Gill, was reportedly taken out of the ground in an ambulance. Gill leaving proved to be fatal for the hosts as they could not stitch a partnership of substance after that, getting bundled out for 189.

Day 2 at Eden Gardens

SA, at stumps on Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens are in deep trouble. India reduced them to 93/7, as the spinners ripped through their batting line-up. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja was the top performer, ending the day with four wickets and once again proving why he is almost unplayable in home conditions.

At Tea, the Proteas were 18/1, but the final session turned into a complete collapse. The Proteas lost six wickets while adding just 75 runs, unable to counter the turn and accuracy of India's spin trio. In total, the day produced 15 wickets, three in the morning, six in the afternoon and six more in the final session.
