Saurabh pointed out that the Tropic of Cancer cuts right through Modhera in Gujarat, where this eleventh-century shrine dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, stands beside the peaceful River Pushpavati. The temple sits amid a landscaped garden filled with flowering trees and birdsong, giving the whole complex an almost cinematic charm — something that clearly intrigued Madhavan enough to reshare it on his Instagram story.

Saurabh explained that the structure’s relationship with the sun is nothing short of astonishing. On June 21, the longest day of the year, the sun positions itself directly above the temple, leaving it without a shadow. He went on to say that the monument feels like a grand tribute to the Sun God, crafted with such scientific precision that on the two equinox days — March 21 and September 23 — the first ray of sunlight travels through the assembly hall and reaches the exact spot where the deity’s idol is placed. He described the temple as nearly a thousand years old and noted how its creators clearly understood celestial movement with remarkable accuracy. Saurabh even wondered why this extraordinary site is not in the list of the world’s seven wonders.

UNESCO calls the Modhera Sun Temple one of India’s finest architectural treasures, showcasing the Maru-Gurjara style that flourished under the Solanki dynasty. Its precision is legendary: the east-facing shrine is aligned so that equinox sunlight travels straight through the Sabhamandapa into the sanctum. The temple is covered in detailed carvings of deities, celestial motifs, flora, and fauna, arranged to create striking patterns of light and shadow.
