The M66 motorway near Bury has been closed in both directions following a horrific crash late Sunday night. This morning traffic is now starting to build across a 12-mile stretch of the motorway network north of Manchester between Bolton and Rochdale.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 10.30pm after receiving reports of a serious incident on the major route.
According to National Highways North-West, the M66 is now closed both ways within the M60/M62 junction and all access to Simister Island remains closed. The M66 southbound has reopened between J3 and M60/M62 but a Greater Manchester Police investigation is expected to last into the morning.
It said: "Greater Manchester Police investigations continue at the scene and are expected to last through the morning. The M66 is now closed both ways within the M60/M62 junction and all access to Simister Island remains closed."
Shocking footage captured at the scene shows a massive emergency response presence at the Simister Island roundabout, with flashing lights illuminating the night sky.
The Express has reached out to Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, and North West Ambulance Service for more details on this developing story.
