A 24-year-old apprentice jockey is in an induced coma horrific fall from her horse during a race. Bailey Rogerson was riding Mandalo at Arawa Park in New Zealand when the horse clipped the heels of another runner, In A Pickle, causing her to hit the floor.

Rogerson, whose grandfather Graeme Rogerson trained the 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient, was rushed to Waikato Hospital where she remains in intensive care. The young sportswoman was placed in an induced coma after suffering a fractured skull and concerns over potential brain bleed.

Graeme Rogerson said: "She has a fracture in her skull and there might also be a broken bone in her neck region, but they haven't been able to X-ray her for that yet, but she has movement in her limbs, so that is good news."

The trainer, who holds the record as the youngest in his country to reach 1,000 winners, told the New Zealand Herald that doctors hope to bring Bailey out of the coma soon. Her mother, former jockey Michelle Northcott, is by her side.

"Obviously we are all very worried," he admitted. "But she is very tough. She rides plenty of horses that often can't win because she accepts rides other people don't want, she just loves riding."

Corentin Berge, the jockey of In A Pickle, received a four-week ban for allowing his horse to interfere with Rogerson's. Earlier in the day, Rogerson had celebrated her 58th career victory on Burnished, marking the third win this season.

The Rogersons' most recent Melbourne Cup contender was multiple Group One champion Sharp 'N' Smart, who finished 16th in the 2024 race, losing to underdog Knight's Choice.

The former New Zealand Horse of the Year for the 2022-2023 season had been aimed at the race again after a promising summer trial at Te Rapa, but ultimately did not make the final line-up on November 4.
