Maulana Badruddin Ajmal's AIUDF eyes 35 seats, begins alliance talks with Kerala UDF for 2026 Assam polls

AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal announced the party will contest 35 seats in the 2026 Assam assembly polls, aiming for better results than Congress. Talks are underway with AIMIM and UDF, despite the Congress having previously resolved to sever ties with AIUDF after the 2021 elections.

Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal talks with Kerala’s United Democratic Front (UDF) for Assam assembly polls of 2026. AIUDF will contest 35 seats in the next assembly polls.

Assam has 126 assembly seats. Ajmal while talking to a media person in Guwahati on Monday said, “He has congratulated Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) for its performance in Bihar polls”.

He said that the party is preparing to contest 35 seats in the upcoming Assam Assembly polls in 2026, asserting that the AIUDF will fare better than the Congress.


“In the upcoming Assembly elections, we will contest in 35 seats. Our results will be better than Congress,” Ajmal declared.

He said party workers are on the ground and expressed confidence following the political outcomes in Bihar. Talks are ongoing with AIMIM and UDF as well. " We have already started meeting and rallies."

After the Assam assembly polls of 2021, the core committee of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has resolved to sever ties with AIUDF and move out AIUDF from the Mahajot (Grand alliance).

In 2021 Congress cobbled up ten parties led grand alliances.

On November 12, seven Opposition parties announced the revival of the Asom Sonmilito Morcha, a front to take on the BJP in the 2026 assembly polls.

Leaders of the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI(M) and three other parties came together at a meeting held at the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat, resolving to fight the polls under a unified banner.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Gaurav Gogoi had said, " To fight BJP’s atrocities and the injustice of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we have all united to provide relief to the people of Assam. We are coming together to contest the 2026 Assembly elections to liberate the citizens of Assam."
Earlier these parties have cobbled similar fronts however owing to rift the alliance got scattered.

Assam is likely to go to assembly polls early next year.
