New Delhi . After West Bengal, protests are increasing in Kerala and Tamil Nadu regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Election Commission’s voter list. BLOs of Tamil Nadu as well as officials up to Tehsildar level have announced boycott from Tuesday. Indian Union Muslim League has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding to stop the ongoing SIR process in Kerala. It says that SIR and local body elections cannot be conducted simultaneously. The petition said that local body elections are to be held in the state in two phases on December 9 and 11, while the SIR draft is to be published on December 4. This will affect the process of civic elections.

The Organization of Tamil Nadu Revenue Employees Unions said they will protest against workload, less manpower, time limit pressure and incomplete training and wages. Here, the Kerala government has approached the Supreme Court demanding postponement of the SIR till the completion of the local body elections. The state argues that it is difficult to conduct SIR simultaneously with local elections. The Commission has issued an order to conduct SIR in Assam. According to the order, new voters in Assam turning 18 on January 1, 2026 will be included and old voters will be verified. The final voter list will be published on February 10, 2026. This is different from the SIR being conducted in 12 states. As per instructions issued to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the qualifying date for special revision in the state will be January 1, 2026.

That means names can be added to the voter list till this day. Door-to-door voter verification will take place from November 22 to December 20. The draft voter list will be published on December 27. The 12 states include Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Of these, elections will be held in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal in 2026.
