WhatsApp is famous worldwide for its end-to-end encryption, but in the last one month, more than 8,000 complaints have been received from across the country that “completely private” chats are being leaked. Cyber experts have made a shocking revelation – in 95% of the cases, chats are not being hacked, rather the users themselves are leaving a small setting open, through which anyone can pick up the phone and read the chat, take a screenshot or record it.
Biggest Mistake: Forgetting to Log in to “Linked Devices”
WhatsApp’s “Linked Devices” feature lets you log in to the same account on up to 4 different phones/laptops. But most people:
Let’s log in with a friend’s phone
Open WhatsApp Web on office computer
Use child’s tablet or relative’s laptop at home
…and forget to log out!
Delhi Cyber Cell’s DCP Anita Roy said, “In 80% of leak cases, the chat remains logged in on some other device. The other person secretly reads everything. Encryption protects only till the server, not till the device.”
other major threats
Screen recording apps: 200+ apps on Android record chats in the background.
Google Backup on: Chats are backed up to Google Drive. If someone accesses your Gmail, they can download old chats.
Notification Preview: The entire message is visible on the lock screen, anyone can read.
Fingerprint/Face Lock Off: If the phone is unlocked then anyone can open the chat.
Last week’s shocking cases
Mumbai: Husband logged in to a device linked to his wife’s phone, viewed 2-year-old chats and filed a divorce case.
Bengaluru: Boss read chats of girl using office laptop, she lost her job.
Lucknow: College student left device linked to friend’s phone open, chat went viral.
Make these 6 settings immediately – chat will remain 100% private
Open WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices → Check all devices → Log out unknown devices immediately
Chat Backup → Turn off or turn on password protected backup
Privacy → Last Seen, Profile Photo, About → “My Contacts Only” or “Nobody”
Privacy → Live Location, Status → Hide everyone in “My Contacts Except…”
Settings → Notifications → Turn off “Use High Priority” (message should not appear on lock screen)
App Lock → Set fingerprint/PIN lock in WhatsApp
Cyber expert Gaurav Gupta says, “WhatsApp is encrypted, but your carelessness makes it an open book. It is most important to check linked devices every week.”
So pick up your phone today and check – is your most private chat open on someone else’s phone or laptop? A one minute setting could save your life!
