Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 November 2025 said over four crore accounts had been opened under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) and that deposits had crossed ₹3.25 lakh crore ( ₹3.25 trillion) in banks. In his speech to the nation in Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh on the birth-centenary celebrations of Sri Satya Sai Baba PM Modi said the scheme was “one of the plans of the country in which our daughters get the highest interest rate of 8.2 per cent”. Launched close to a decade ago to help with the education and future of girl children the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana allows the parents/guardian to open a small savings account in a girl child’s name until she is 10 years old and make deposits until the child is 15. The Prime Minister’s announcement is a significant inflection point for the scheme’s reach as well as its usage levels. The assurance of higher interest -at present 8.2 per cent - was also highlighted as a unique aspect. “This is one of the plans … in which our daughters get the highest interest rate of 8.2 per cent” the Prime Minister said. Apart from the SSY PM Modi also spoke on cow protection saying that more than 480 cows had been distributed in Varanasi under the National Gokul Mission. “The work of returning the first-born calf to another family in Vrindavan is being practised by me as well. In the last eight years over 1700 “crowns” have been placed in the temple town” he added. PM Modi hailed the cow as “a symbol of life prosperity and compassion” in Indian tradition and a crucial determinant of financial nutritional and social wellbeing.
