Vivek Oberoi faces backlash for omitting Atif Aslam in instagra

Indian actor Vivek Oberoi has unexpectedly returned to the spotlight, though not for a film project or a comeback. Instead, he has drawn attention for posting an Instagram Reel in which he sings along to ‘Tere Liye’, the popular 2010 track from his movie Prince, while omitting a key detail: the name of the song’s lead vocalist, Atif Aslam.

The video, recorded inside Oberoi’s car, shows the actor dramatically lipsyncing as he praises the track in the caption: “This song… is just magic… anytime anywhere… just gets me grooving! Do your version of ‘Tere Liye’, and tag me, I would love to see your takes! @kumartaurani, Singer: @shreyaghoshal, Lyricist: #Sameer, Music Director: @sachingupta1208, Director: @kookievgulati.”

What stood out immediately was the missing credit. Despite the song being a duet featuring Atif Aslam and Shreya Ghoshal and despite Aslam’s voice being the portion Oberoi mimed, the actor mentioned only Ghoshal. Fans were quick to point out the selective omission. One user attempted to defend Oberoi, saying, “Not mentioned Atif Aslam because Pakistani accounts are not showing in India.”

While it is true that Pakistani artists’ profiles cannot be tagged from India, this technical limitation does not prevent someone from simply writing their name. The complete exclusion of Aslam’s name has therefore sparked debate, with many describing it as yet another example of how Pakistani artists remain widely heard but quietly erased within India’s entertainment industry.

The longstanding ban on Pakistani talent continues to shape such omissions, intentional or otherwise. Oberoi has not addressed the controversy, though the reel has generated more than 19 million views, far more than the engagement on his usual posts.

Whether an oversight or a deliberate choice, the episode underscores how Pakistani artists’ contributions remain essential yet increasingly uncredited, even as their music continues to echo through Bollywood stars’ playlists.
