The biggest difficulty for content creators in the world of social media has been to protect their hard-earned money from thieves. But now Meta has found a solution to this problem. The company has launched a new mobile-based tool called ‘Facebook Content Protection’ that will send creators instant alerts when their original Reel is copied by someone else on Facebook or Instagram. This feature will not only detect piracy, but will also give creators the right to block, track or claim. This move by Meta will provide relief to crores of creators, especially in a market like India where the popularity of Reels is at its peak.
This feature builds on Meta’s existing ‘Rights Manager’ tool, which is already in use by major brands and copyright holders. But now it has become open to common creators. The company says that this tool will reduce the abundance of spammy or recycled videos on the platform by giving priority to original content. In July, Meta had removed more than 1 crore fake profiles that were imitating creators. This new tool is part of the same campaign that will free creators from copycats.

How will this feature work?
The tool is based entirely on a mobile app and is not currently available in a desktop version, although Meta has said it will be expanded to the professional dashboard soon. Here is the step-by-step process:

Registration and Protection: Creators must upload their original Reel to Facebook. Tracking on Instagram is possible only when the reel is cross-posted with the ‘Share to Facebook’ option. Once uploaded, the tool will automatically mark the reel as protected. Eligible creators will receive a prompt in their feed, profile, or professional dashboard. If you are not eligible, apply from the ‘Content Protection’ section of the dashboard or apply on the Meta website.
Detection and Alerts: The tool will continuously scan Facebook and Instagram. If a full or partial match is found – meaning all or part of your reel has been copied – an immediate notification will be sent. The details of the thief’s account, the location of the copy and the percentage of match will be visible in the alert.

Action Options: Creators will have three main options when they receive an alert:
Block: Visibility of the copied reel will be blocked on both Facebook and Instagram. This will remove his reach, but no penalty will be imposed on the thief account – so that the feature is not misused.
Track with attribution: Monitor the performance of copied reels and automatically add attribution links that will credit the original creator.
Release: If you have no objections (such as in collaboration), release the claim. Additionally, there is an ‘Allow List’ feature, where you can pre-approve the accounts that are allowed to be reused.

This feature is first available to creators participating in Meta’s monetization program who meet ‘Enhanced Integrity and Originality Standards’. Rights Manager users will also get immediate access. In India, where Instagram has over 500 million users and Reels generates 10 billion views daily, this tool will be a boon for small creators.
Who will get the benefit?

Influencers and YouTubers: Help protect those who share cross-platform content from piracy.
Small Businesses and Brands: Protection of marketing reels will preserve brand value.
New creators: Those who struggle with spam accounts will now be able to easily make their mark.
Collaborators: Partnerships will be smoother with the Allow List.

Earlier, creators had to rely on manual search or third-party tools, which was time-consuming and risky. Now this system of Meta will provide real-time protection. The company said that this feature will help original creators thrive, without living in the shadow of copycats. Although there are currently limitations for Instagram-only Reels, Meta has promised to expand to full coverage soon.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said, “Creators are the backbone of our ecosystem. We will provide them all possible support.” This feature is a big step in that direction. The number of reels creators in India has crossed 2 crores, and with this tool their earnings will be secure. Overall, Meta once again proved that it is committed to strengthening the creator economy.
