Bollywood’s upcoming film ‘Dharindar’ has sparked strong criticism from audiences in Pakistan and India. The backlash followed the release of the film’s trailer.
The trailer portrays Lyari, Karachi, as a war zone. Ranveer Singh plays a RAW agent entering what the film calls “hostile” Pakistani territory. Arjun Rampal appears as a Pakistani intelligence officer. This depiction has been widely criticized as unrealistic and exaggerated.
The film also includes Pakistani political imagery. It shows a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) rally, images of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, and PPP flags. Observers say this use of political symbols is inappropriate and controversial.
Critics in Pakistan believe the film promotes anti-Pakistan narratives. The casting has also drawn ridicule. Sanjay Dutt plays the late SSP Chaudhry Aslam, and Akshaye Khanna portrays Rehman Dakait. Many online users have called these roles sensationalized and far from reality.
‘Dharindar’ is scheduled for release in early December. Despite not being released yet, it has already caused embarrassment for Bollywood. Viewers say the film exaggerates events and presents a distorted image of Pakistan.
Experts warn that films like this can influence public perception and worsen cross-border tensions. They say cinema should be responsible when depicting real people, cities, and political events.
The controversy highlights a growing trend in some films to use sensationalism and political narratives to attract attention, often at the cost of accuracy.
