Devastated Patrick Dorgu admits Denmark squandered their chance of automatic World Cup qualification. The Danes had their destiny in their own hands but faltered with a home draw against Belarus before requiring just a point at Hampden, only to concede twice in added time.
Scotland consequently topped the group and secured their World Cup berth, leaving Denmark to face the play-offs. Manchester United star Dorgu said: "We were there and threw it away. "Saturday's game had nothing to do with the Scotland game. "Saturday's game was bad but we should still have had the best outcome from the game against Scotland. "We shouldn't lose the game. We did and that wasn't good enough."
Denmark had fought back twice to draw level, with Dorgu grabbing their second equaliser just nine minutes from the end of normal time. He believed that would be sufficient.
An emotional Dorgu said: "I felt when I scored I thought surely they are not coming back, but they did. "It is football. "We are really disappointed that we couldn't get the win for our fans.
"It is difficult to put words into what has happened. "It is part of football and we just need to look forward now."
The left-back found himself up against Ben Gannon-Doak, who provided the assist for Scott McTominay's spectacular opening strike. The winger tormented the Danish defence before departing through injury in the opening period. Dorgu faced him directly, though he didn't necessarily agree with that assessment. The 21-year-old claimed: "He wasn't really causing problems.
"He had one cross and that was it. Of course, he had a lot more pace than the other Scotland players on the pitch, but I don't think it would have changed the course of the game any, if he had stayed on. We lost the game and we can't look at what could have been."
McTominay's spectacular overhead kick proved to be the standout moment amongst Scotland's goals. Dorgu is familiar with him from their spell together at United, prior to the midfielder's switch to Napoli.
Dorgu acknowledged: "It was a good goal but we also have enough good players at United as well. I am happy for him winning the league in Napoli."
Whilst Scotland were jubilant, Denmark were left to reflect on their disappointment. Dorgu remains convinced his nation can still secure their place alongside the Scots in America, Mexico and Canada. The former Lecce player confirmed: "I am confident. We have a good team and we just need to come back strong and sharp for the next games. "We need to give it all because we have two finals now. I am confident."
At club level, Manchester United have also shown improvement. Dorgu feels he has plenty of reasons for optimism across all competitions.
"100% we just need to look forward," he added. "We are in a really good position at United. "We will go back with confidence to help the team to get more wins. "Denmark is now March. "It is a long time and we just need to concentrate on club matters until then."
