With a fairytale charm, narrow cobbled streets and medieval buildings, this town has been hailed as one of the most "beautiful places" in Europe by an exceptionally seasoned wanderer - and it's not where you'd expect.

Henrik Jeppesen has ventured to every country on Earth - that's an astounding 193 in total - and has crossed off over 2,000 locations from his ever-growing bucket list. The adventurer, originally from Thy in northwest Jutland, Denmark, has been roaming the world since he turned 17, accumulating a wealth of expert insights and extensive recommendations.

From his worldly travel experience, Henrik knows a thing or two about European destinations and has marvelled at the breathtaking landscapes and enchanting streets of locations that holidaymakers can often bypass. Far from the tourist hotspots of Rome, Barcelona, Paris, or Amsterdam lies the enchanting town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany.

"It's a very fairytale-like town, it's very old with well-preserved buildings," Henrik told the Express. "It's one of the most beautiful places in all of Europe."

He added: "After visiting more than 2,000 destinations, one of the things I enjoy the most is visiting beautiful towns and villages on a road trip. I especially enjoy places set in stunning surroundings or that have an extraordinary architecture, which can create a special atmosphere. One of these places is Rothenburg ob der Tauber."

Describing the medieval town, the explorer said it has "half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, narrow alleyways, beautiful old squares in a town that might feel like stepping into a fairy tale movie set in the 1500s."

Found in northern Bavaria, it's easy to see why Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most picturesque and striking locations in Europe, with its cobbled streets lined with colourful medieval buildings. Taking a stroll here is like stepping into a history book, with its renowned, well-preserved city walls encircling the old town, which are walkable for locals and visitors.

To gaze upon this marvel, featuring 42 ancient towers and gatehouses, visitors can look over the Tauber valley, where they'll capture traditional German heritage at its finest. Additionally, the town boasts a bustling market square, described as a "historical jewel for unforgettable experiences".

There are boutiques, souvenir stores, and art galleries in the heart of the enchanting town's market square, nestled among the medieval architecture. "There are a lot of shops, so if you like going in and tasting local things, you can do that or go spend an afternoon or evening at a restaurant," Henrik shared.

Visitors can also wander the narrow cobbled alleyways in search of charming cafes and restaurants for some traditional treats and dishes. "I just went for a day trip and walked around. I thought it was just so charming and lovely", he added.

Elsewhere, some of the town's major sites are the iconic Town Hall, Blade Gate, Castle Garden, the Medieval Crime Museum, and the German Christmas Museum. During the festive season, they also host the oldest Christmas market in Rothenburg, known as the Reiterlesmarkt, which offers traditional gifts and festive merriment.

However, considering its distinctive characteristics, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is becoming increasingly popular with holidaymakers, despite its often overlooked status. Henrik remarked, "The only downside is that it's already discovered, and I'm well aware that by mentioning it, the problem will only get bigger.

"But that would be one way to describe it. Yes, it's discovered, but it's still underrated because it's not one of the top 10 cities or places people talk about in Europe. Yet, it is one of the absolutely most beautiful ones."

The expert noted that it's a "fantastic day trip", so if you're driving or on a road trip in Europe, "it's easy to add to your itinerary". Alternatively, Rothenburg ob der Tauber has a train station, so it's easily accessible for an enchanting day out or weekend away with plenty to admire and explore.

"Europe is full of stunning towns and villages. Instead of paying for expensive trips to other continents, my opinion is that there is enough in Europe for a whole lifetime of travel experiences, even if you travel every day," Henrik added.
