U.S. border authorities have arrested a 22-year-old fugitive wanted for murder in India after he attempted to sneak into Canada using a false identity. Vishat Kumar was stopped on Sunday at the Peace Bridge crossing between Buffalo, New York, and Ontario, where officers say he tried to enter the country under a fake name and birth date.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered that Kumar was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued by India, which has been seeking his arrest in connection with a murder case. He was denied entry into Canada, and during secondary inspection, biometric checks revealed his true identity.

According to CBP, Kumar illegally entered the United States last year and later failed to appear for an asylum interview. After being turned back from Canada, he was transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is now being held at a federal detention centre in Batavia, New York. Officials say he is awaiting removal proceedings that will return him to India.

Interpol Red Notices alert police agencies worldwide about fugitives wanted for major crimes such as murder or armed robbery. They are not arrest warrants, and enforcement depends on each country’s laws. While the U.S. and India share an extradition treaty, officials noted that deporting someone already in the United States illegally does not require a formal extradition process.

Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek praised the officers involved, noting that the arrest underscores the importance of international cooperation and border vigilance. She said the case demonstrates how biometric technology and cross-border coordination help ensure fugitives cannot evade accountability.

Authorities have not released details about the murder case for which India is seeking Kumar.
