Google announced the updates at the ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ event in Delhi, which are specially designed to protect digital users in India from online fraud and make the use of AI safer. The company’s focus is particularly on children, youth and senior citizens, as these groups are the most vulnerable to online scams. At this event, Google introduced some important features and security protocols, which will keep users’ data safe, transactions protected and AI-generated content easier to identify. The biggest update is real-time scam detection coming to Pixel devices. Based on Gemini Nano technology, this feature analyzes suspicious conversations on the phone itself and immediately alerts the user if a scam is detected. Importantly, no audio is recorded in this process, no transcript is created and no data is sent to Google. This feature provides immediate protection to the user while preserving privacy. As it is off by default, the user has to turn it on manually.
Google has announced some major updates to enhance security in India. These include additional security for financial apps like Google Pay, Paytm, Navi, the new ePNV technology that replaces SMS OTP, and the wider availability of an AI watermarking and detection tool called SynthID in India. AI-generated content is easily identifiable with SynthID and is now being made open to researchers, academic institutions and media organizations. As the use of AI in India grows rapidly, this solution is considered important to answer the threats that come with it.
To protect users from scams, Google is rolling out a new feature for Android 11 and later—screen-sharing scam alerts. When someone opens Google Pay, Paytm or Navi while sharing the screen on a call with an unknown person, an instant alert will appear on the screen. This feature will protect against screen-sharing scammers.
In addition, Google is introducing a new security protocol called Enhanced Phone Number Verification (ePNV). It is a more secure and SIM-based verification solution than the OTP based system. While conventional SMS OTP is susceptible to tampering or spoofing by malicious apps, ePNV puts an end to those threats. Phone number verification is going to be more accurate, fast and secure.

Google said that Google Play Protect has prevented more than 11.5 crore dangerous apps from being installed in the last few months. This shows the company’s focus on creating a secure digital environment for Indian users. All these updates have one goal—to make people in India experience safe, transparent and reliable use of AI.
These new announcements and tools will enable users in India to transact more securely, easily identify fake AI content and protect their digital lives from fraud. This initiative by Google will be an important step towards increasing the responsible and safe use of AI in the country.
