A sixteen year old student of St Columba's School in Delhi, Shourya Patil, died by suicide earlier this week. The tragedy has triggered swift action from the school, which has suspended the headmaster and three teachers who were named in the police complaint filed by his father.
Shourya left behind a note accusing his teachers of mistreatment, and his family has alleged sustained harassment. Suspension Issued After FIR In the complaint registered on Wednesday, Shourya's father, Pradeep Patil, named the headmaster for classes five to ten, Aparajita Pal, along with teachers Julie Varghese, Manu Kalra and Yukti Aggarwal Mahajan. He accused them of mentally tormenting his son, claiming this pressure pushed him toward taking his own life. The school principal, Robert Fernandes, wrote identical letters to all four staff members informing them of their immediate suspension. He stated that the decision would remain in force until further notice and that each of them must remain fully available for any investigation. He also directed them not to enter the school or interact with students, parents or staff without written permission. In the letter, the principal wrote, "This is to inform you that the school has been made aware of an FIR registered against you, bearing No. 336A Tis Hazari Court, dated 19th November 2025... In view of the seriousness of the allegations, the competent authority has decided to place you under suspension with immediate effect." He added, "You shall remain under suspension till the completion of the investigation and further orders from the competent authority. During the period of suspension, you are required to remain available for any official communication or inquiry, and you must not visit the school premises or interact with students, staff, or parents without prior written permission from the administration." Allegations by the Family Shourya died by suicide on Tuesday afternoon after jumping from the Rajendra Place Metro Station. In the FIR, Pradeep alleged that the teachers regularly scolded his son for the most minor issues and humiliated him in ways that deeply affected his confidence. According to Pradeep, Shourya's friends told him that Julie Varghese had been warning the teenager for several days that he would be expelled and that a transfer certificate would be issued. He also stated that teacher Manu Kalra had once pushed his son. Regarding the events of Tuesday, Pradeep said Shourya fell during a dramatics class and was mocked by teacher Yukti Mahajan, who allegedly told him he was overacting. She then scolded him to the point that he began crying, after which she reportedly told him he could cry as much as he wanted and that it made no difference to her. Pradeep claimed that headmaster Aparajita Pal witnessed these events but did not intervene. Speaking to NDTV, Pradeep said, "The teachers kept on torturing him... Three days ago, a teacher told him that she would call us and tell us that he would be removed from the school. It is unimaginable to tell a student this just 10 days before the pre-board exams." He also said, "My son studied in the school since Class 2. He used to tell me teachers kept harassing him. I told him to wait for a few days and, after that, we would admit him to another school. He was happy about that... A time came when the teachers harassed him so badly that he told them he started having suicidal thoughts (and had told a school counsellor). The school should have told us about this. No one said anything. We found out only after meeting students who are protesting in front of the school in memory of my son." Government Steps In The Delhi government has ordered a high level inquiry into the events leading up to Shourya's death. A five member panel headed by Joint Director Harshit Jain has been set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to determine administrative responsibility. The committee has been tasked with conducting a thorough and impartial investigation and submitting its findings within three days.
