Period drama lovers have been raving about a beloved TV series, which has been removed from Disney+ "too soon". The American musical fantasy comedy series, Galavant, was created and written by Dan Fogelman and serves as a tongue-in-cheek deconstruction of classic fairy tales. Disney music legends Alan Menken and Glenn Slater also worked on the adventure series, which centres on the misadventures of the titular hero (played by Joshua Sasse).
The once-dashing knight falls into a drunken despair after his true love, Madalena (Mallory Jansen), is kidnapped by the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson). Galavant is prepared to use many skills to win back his beautiful lady and avenge her, but he is surprised by the twists and turns he encounters along the way.
When Galavant arrives to rescue her, Madalena surprisingly decides to stay with Richard for his wealth and power, leaving the hero heartbroken. It's at this point that the disheartened knight enters the second series on a quest to find himself and the next love of his life along the way.
As his adventures continue, he makes startling discoveries about those he held dear and forms new, unexpected bonds. The show is known for its witty dialogue, catchy songs, and self-referential humour, which blends elements of The Princess Bride, Monty Python, and traditional Disney musicals.
The show features cameo appearances from several famous faces, including Ricky Gervais, Kylie Minogue, Matt Lucas, Nick Frost and Eddie Marsan. The series was largely shown in the UK, with many of the scenes filmed in Bristol.
Other filming locations include Caldicot Castle and Caerphilly Castle in Wales, Southern Down on the Bristol Channel, Berkeley Castle, Cosmeston Medieval Village, and Wells Cathedral.
Since its release in 2015, the series has garnered an impressive 88% score on the popular critics' website, Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have since showered the period drama with praise online, with one user gushing: "An instant cult-classic that really hits its stride in the first series."
Another agreed: "A definite must-watch! O think that this show is so well done! It is such an entertaining show, and it just gets better and better. Please watch this show, I can guarantee you that you will not regret it."
A third chimed in with: "I LOVE this show. I have to admit, I'm a Monty Python/ Mel Brooks lover, so this limited series is right up my alley! Disney needs to bring it back. RIP, gone too soon." Although Galavant is no longer on Disney+, viewers can stream the two-series show on Hulu.
