After taking the oath for the tenth time as the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar is on track to surpass Jyoti Basu's record of 23 years as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, provided that everything goes smoothly in the newly formed NDA government over the next five years. If he can maintain unity within the NDA, Kumar, the leader of the Janata Dal (United), could join the ranks of long-serving Chief Ministers like Pawan Kumar Chamling of Sikkim and Naveen Patnaik of Odisha, who have led their states for approximately 25 and 24 years, respectively. He is already recognized as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar.
Early Tenure and Political Journey
Nitish Kumar's initial term as the Chief Minister of the united Bihar began in 2000, albeit briefly, as he held the position for just seven days. His second term spanned from 2005 to 2010, followed by a third term from 2010 to 2014. The 74-year-old veteran leader resigned from the Chief Minister's position in May 2014, taking moral responsibility for his party's poor performance in the general elections. He returned to the role in February 2015 after the resignation of Jitan Ram Manjhi, prior to a confidence vote.
New Cabinet and Responsibilities
As the newly elected NDA legislators took their oaths in the Bihar cabinet, leaders from the BJP, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), and other allied parties described the event as "historic". They emphasized the significant responsibility placed on the new government following a strong mandate from the people of Bihar. Chirag Paswan, the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), stated that the double-engine government would prioritize Bihar first and the people of Bihar, based on Prime Minister Modi's vision and Nitish Kumar's experience.
Ministers Express Commitment
The newly appointed ministers also expressed gratitude and commitment. JD(U)'s Leshi Singh stated her determination to work tirelessly for Bihar's development, while Shravan Kumar thanked the public for the "overwhelming mandate" and pledged to fulfill all promises. BJP minister Ram Kripal Yadav committed to working towards a developed Bihar in line with the NDA's development agenda. Leshi Singh reiterated her gratitude to the Chief Minister for his trust in her and vowed to contribute significantly to Bihar's progress. Shravan Kumar added, "I express my gratitude to the people of Bihar for their massive mandate. We will work to fulfill all promises made to the public."
