Security researchers have said that they managed to scrape phone numbers associated with more than 3.5 billion active WhatsApp accounts, including about 75 crore Indian users, the highest number in the world. More importantly and critically, researchers were able to obtain publicly visible WhatsApp profile photos of 62 percent (or 46.5 crore) Indian users, along with ‘about’ text, companion-device usage, business account information and other profile details. Researchers have said that they have created a huge database with the help of WhatsApp contact discovery feature. According to research, the contact-discovery feature will help users find and interact with other users. However, this feature can also be misused, which will put users’ data at risk. It can be exploited to collect large amounts of WhatsApp profile data using advanced techniques that exploit the platform’s XMPP endpoints.

Of the 3.5 billion accounts, researchers were able to scrape the public profile photos of 57 percent of users. In Brazil, 61 percent of the 206 million WhatsApp-linked numbers found had public profile photos. This is the second highest number after India.
