YouTube is getting ready to enhance the video-watching experience by bringing back in-app private messaging. After almost six years, the platform has started testing real-time chat and video sharing features directly inside the YouTube app. Once fully rolled out, users will be able to talk and share videos without switching to WhatsApp, Instagram, or any other social app.
Feature testing begins in select regions
YouTube has launched the new chat and video-sharing tools for users aged 18 and above in Ireland and Poland. With this update, users can share longer videos, Shorts, and even livestreams directly within YouTube. Real-time conversation inside the app has been one of the most requested features for years, and YouTube is finally experimenting with it again.
How the new feature works
According to YouTube’s support page, users can tap the Share button, which opens a full-screen chat window. From there, they can send videos, start conversations, and reply using text, emojis, or even other videos. The goal is to make content sharing easier and keep users within the YouTube ecosystem instead of redirecting them to other apps.
Stricter safety rules and controls
Since YouTube discontinued its earlier messaging system in 2019 due to child-safety concerns, the company has introduced strict safeguards this time:
• Only users aged 18+ can access the feature.
• All chats must follow YouTube Community Guidelines.
• Suspicious messages may be scanned or reviewed.
• Users must accept an invitation before a chat begins.
• Options to block a channel, report a chat, or unsend a message are available.
• Chat notifications will appear alongside regular YouTube notifications.
Why YouTube is bringing messaging back
YouTube says the new system allows safe experimentation before expanding the feature further. The current test is limited to Ireland and Poland, but if successful, the feature could launch in more countries soon. This marks the platform’s first major attempt to restore messaging since its removal six years ago.
