The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is considering making important changes in the Aadhaar card. In future, name, address, father’s name i.e. personal information will be removed from it and only the photo of the holder and QR code can remain. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar told in an online conference that new rules are being made to prevent misuse of copy of Aadhaar. After this, even after viewing the Aadhaar card and submitting its photocopy, your details will not go to any other person, institution, office or companies.

Especially hotels, telecom SIM sellers, organizers of conferences, seminars etc. will not be able to misuse the photocopy of your Aadhaar. UIDAI is planning to implement the new rules in December 2025. For this, UIDAI will soon launch a new mobile app of Aadhaar. This app will allow Aadhaar holders to share identity digitally without photocopy and get complete or selected information verified. The new app will make the process of sharing identity digitally more secure, simple and paperless.

What will happen in the new base…

  • In future the card may have only photo + Secure QR code. Name can also be printed but Aadhaar number will not be visible.
  • The QR code can be scanned with a custom app or UIDAI certified tool, thereby verifying the details online.
  • Offline verification i.e. the method of identification through photocopy of the card will be gradually reduced.
  • Currently, the Aadhaar card contains name, Aadhaar number, photo, QR code. The methods of verification are both offline and online. There is a risk of photocopying and misuse of data offline.

Why is this change necessary?

Data theft through photocopying

Hotels, event organizers, delivery boys, gyms etc. often ask for photocopy of Aadhaar. All personal information is visible in the photocopy. This can lead to misuse of data and identity theft.

violation of law

According to the Aadhaar Act, no institution has the right to keep a physical copy or photocopy of Aadhaar. Yet many organizations do this.

privacy protection

The new design will be in line with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which will be fully implemented in 18 months.

ban on false grounds

It will become very difficult to create fake Aadhaar with QR code based system.

Due to change…

  • Aadhaar cards are frequently copied, which can lead to misuse of identities and data.
  • QR code based verification system has made digital identity more secure.
  • Having fewer details on the card will reduce the perception that printed documents are reliable.
  • Lack of other information on Aadhaar card will pose a challenge to those making fake documents.
