Veteran Bollywood star Dharmendra has sadly passed away today, November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. He had been battling health issues for a while. Recently, he was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to age-related ailments and later received care at home. His death was confirmed by film director and producer Karan Johar through an Instagram post.

Health Struggles

It is important to note that Dharmendra had been experiencing breathing difficulties and other age-related health concerns, which led to his hospitalization. This condition, known as dyspnea, required him to be placed on a ventilator for a period.

Understanding Dyspnea

What is Dyspnea?

Dyspnea refers to the sensation of difficulty in breathing and is not classified as a disease but rather a symptom of various underlying health issues. Conditions affecting the respiratory or cardiovascular systems, such as asthma, pneumonia, heart failure, or anemia, can lead to dyspnea.

This breathing difficulty can vary in duration, from brief episodes to prolonged experiences. Diagnosing and treating dyspnea can be challenging due to its diverse causes, and it is more prevalent among older adults.

Causes of Dyspnea

What Triggers Dyspnea?

Several factors can lead to shortness of breath. For instance, individuals may experience this sensation when ascending to high altitudes or during sudden temperature changes. In some instances, dyspnea may indicate serious health issues.

Conditions such as asthma, stress, heart disease, airway obstruction, allergic reactions, anemia, or iron deficiency can contribute to this problem. Additionally, heart failure, fluctuations in blood pressure, and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) can also be factors.

Symptoms of Dyspnea

Recognizing Symptoms

Common symptoms associated with dyspnea require prompt recognition and intervention. If shortness of breath occurs suddenly or is severe, it may indicate a serious medical condition.

Symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath after physical activity
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Chest tightness
  • Rapid breathing
  • Feeling of suffocation
  • Increased heart rate
  • Persistent wheezing or coughing

Managing Dyspnea

Treatment and Prevention

Addressing breathing difficulties depends on the underlying cause.

For shortness of breath due to exertion, resting may provide relief. In more severe cases, supplemental oxygen may be necessary. Individuals with asthma or COPD should seek medical assistance. Those with pre-existing respiratory conditions are encouraged to follow preventive measures.

Preventive measures include:

  • Avoiding cigarettes and second-hand smoke
  • Steering clear of chemical fumes and wood smoke
  • Engaging in yoga and exercise to strengthen the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
