The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a major decision to no longer accept Aadhaar cards as proof of date of birth. Aadhaar will no longer be accepted for recruitment, promotion, and other government functions. Learn about the new rules, valid documents, and complete government guidelines.

The Uttar Pradesh government has made a major change to the rules related to Aadhaar cards, clarifying that Aadhaar will no longer be accepted as a proof of date of birth in any government department. This decision comes at a time when Aadhaar was considered the primary document for verifying date of birth in many departments. The government argues that ensuring the authenticity of required documents is now more important than ever.

The government issued an order, directing all departments

The Planning Department has issued an order in this regard and directed all the Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Heads of Departments and Divisional Commissioners that in future, Aadhaar card should not be considered as proof of date of birth in any recruitment, promotion, pension or other government processes.

This move was taken based on a letter from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) dated October 31, 2025, which clarified that the date of birth recorded in Aadhaar is, in most cases, an estimated or self-declared one. Therefore, it cannot be considered as authentic proof of date of birth.

Aadhaar is now limited to identity and address verification only.

UIDAI had directed all states and union territories to use Aadhaar only for identity and address verification. Following this, the Uttar Pradesh government also took a step forward, clarifying that Aadhaar would no longer be a valid document for date of birth verification.

These documents will be valid for proof of date of birth

The government also informed that now only the following documents will be valid for verifying the date of birth:

  • High School or equivalent examination mark sheet/certificate
  • Birth Certificate (issued by Municipal Corporation/Gram Panchayat)
  • Passport
  • Service Book (For Government employees only)

It is clear that now Aadhaar card can be used only for establishing identity and not for date of birth verification.

Deep impact on employees and candidates

This decision will directly impact millions of government employees and job candidates who have previously used Aadhaar as a convenient means of proving their date of birth. People may face additional difficulties, especially in rural areas where obtaining birth certificates remains a challenge.

However, the government believes this decision was necessary to maintain the authenticity of documents, prevent misinformation, and make records transparent. The government says it will also raise awareness about birth certificates and other valid documents in the coming days.
