The SUV market is constantly introducing new technology, new design and eco-friendly options. Amidst these changes, Mahindra and Tata Motors are once again in discussion — on one side is the fully electric Mahindra XEV 9S, then on the other hand the petrol-powered Tata Sierra is coming back with its iconic identity.

The character of both SUVs is completely different, but the comparison becomes interesting because the buyer wants to know which one gives more value in practical life. If power and features are in priority, the XEV 9S looks more attractive, and if comfort and old-school SUV vibe are needed, the Sierra may become the first choice of many.

design

The Mahindra XEV 9S is designed like a born-electric SUV. Due to long wheelbase, modern portions and INGLO platforms, its stance seems quite futuristic and premium. This in itself is a full-size 3-row electric SUV, which does not currently see direct combat in the Indian market.

Tata on the other hand combines Sierra nostalgia with modern design to create a distinct identity. Smart Plus petrol variant is designed for practical usage and rugged SUV appeal. At the design level both SUVs follow completely different philosophies.

Price

The price of XEV 9S goes from ₹19.95 lakhs to ₹29.45 lakhs. In comparison, the initial price of Tata Sierra is kept at just ₹11.49 lakhs, i.e. the base variant of XEV 9S is also ₹8.46 lakhs expensive from Sierra. This gap is sure to be big, but it is difficult to see it as a straight combat due to the category and driverrain separation of both SUVs.

The XEV 9S is a high-tech electric SUV, while the Sierra currently targets exclusively value-focused buyers with the ICE-powered petrol setup.

Performance & Power

The Mahindra XEV 9S goes much further in performance. In its Pack Three Above 79kWh variant, the mounted motor gives a massive power of 210 kW i.e. 282 bhp, which Sierra cannot compare at all. The 1.5L Revotron petrol engine of Sierra gives 105 bhp, which gives city-friendly performance, but not instant acceleration and high-speed stability like the XEV 9S.

Talking of drive experience, the RWD layout and single-speed automatic gearbox of the XEV 9S gives a smooth and silent performance, while the 6-speed manual gearbox of the Sierra offers traditional driving feel. If pure power and refined electric performance are the priority, then the XEV 9S is the clear winner.

Battery & Range

The XEV 9S offers the longest claimed range with electric performance in this comparison. With a large 79 kWh battery pack it can run up to 679 km in a single charge. This figure is higher than any mass-market electric SUV in the Indian market.
