The rules for obtaining an Aadhaar card and updating name, address, date of birth, etc. have changed. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has notified these changes under the Aadhaar (Nomination and Update) Third Amendment Regulations, 2025. These changes aim to simplify and make the process of submitting documents used as proof of identity, address, relationship, and date of birth simpler and more reliable. UIDAI has expanded the various categories by including several government certificates, digital IDs, and official records. The updated list of documents will apply to all age groups, including children, adults, and senior citizens.

Documents for Adults (18+ Years)
The revised list clarifies four main categories for adults: Proof of Identity (PoI), Proof of Address (PoA), Proof of Date of Birth (PoB), and Proof of Relationship (PoR).

Category of Proof: Key Acceptable Documents
Identity (PoI) and Address (PoA): Indian passport, voter ID, ration card, driving license, government service ID, pensioner/freedom fighter ID, MNREGA job card, caste certificate, and certificate issued by an MP/MLA/Gazetted Officer in the format prescribed by UIDAI.

Address (PoA): Additional electricity, water, mobile, broadband, or gas bills not older than three months; property tax receipts, bank passbooks or statements, insurance policies valid for one year, and a registered sale or lease deed.

Date of Birth (PoB): Birth certificate, passport, school board/university mark sheet showing date of birth, pension order, or certificate issued by a gazetted officer/tehsildar.

Relationship (PoR): Acceptable in cases of Head of Family (HoF)-based enrollment. These include a birth certificate, an MNREGA job card showing family relationship, a caste certificate showing parents' names, and a court order on legal guardianship.

These documents are required for children.
UIDAI has also clarified the list for children under 5 and those aged 5 to 18. Accordingly, for children under 5, birth certificates and Head of Family (HoF)-based enrolment documents will remain the primary proof. Children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 can submit any acceptable PoI or PoA document. Additionally, a birth certificate or a school-issued date of birth document is acceptable as PoB.

New Rules for Aadhaar Correction
The acceptable documents for Aadhaar details correction have been updated. This includes additional records such as marriage certificates, divorce decrees, gazette notifications for name changes, bank statements, self-declarations by immediate family members for address updates, and prisoner inclusion documents. UIDAI has stated that additional verification may be required for certain certificates issued by public representatives or shelter home authorities.

The revised rules also specify that Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, long-term visa holders, and citizens of Nepal/Bhutan who have stayed in India for at least 182 days in the last 12 months will have to follow a separate list of documents.
