According to research, if a man consumes metformin during the 3 months before pregnancy, it can increase the risk of birth defects in the child by 40 percent. Such children born between 1997 and 2016 were included in the research, whose father was a diabetic patient and for this he was taking metformin.

According to the study, the birth defect in children born to men who had type 2 diabetes was 3.1 percent, let us tell you that these people did not consume metformin. Whereas the birth defects in children born to men who took metformin due to diabetes was 4.6 percent. Researchers found that children of men who took metformin during the 3 months before conception had more birth defects, especially genital defects.

Research also found that the children of those who took metformin more than three months before or after the drug did not have any kind of birth defect, nor were any such problems found in the children born after those children.

Researchers did not find any birth defects in children born to fathers who took insulin three months before conception. Let us tell you that no concrete evidence has been found so far in this study. In such a situation, it is necessary that more studies to this be done. So that we can get clear results. Apart from this, the American Food and Drug Administration has also not yet issued any warning about this problem caused by the consumption of metformin. In such a situation, it is important that men suffering from diabetes who take metformin should consult a doctor before conceiving.
