What happens in the SIR process?
Door-to-door verification by BLOs will now take place till 11 December 2025. Polling booths will also be reorganized by December 11. The dates for the control chart update and draft list are from 12 December to 15 December 2025. The draft voter list will be published on December 16. Thereafter, the period for filing claims and objections will be from December 16, 2025 to January 15, 2026. During this period, the process of issuance of notice, hearing, verification and adjudication along with disposal of claims and objections by ERO will take place simultaneously. This period will be from 16 December 2025 to 7 February 2026. After that the final publication of voter list will be on 14 February 2026.
The deadline for submission of forms for the SIR process, which is currently underway in 12 states, is not December 4, but the government has extended it by another seven days. Therefore, the SIR process will continue till December 11. It is learned that this decision has been taken due to the increased workload on BLs in many districts as well as in the state. Meanwhile, the draft voter list to be announced on December 9, 2025 has also been postponed by a week. Now this draft is going to be released on 16 December 2025.

What is the purpose of SIR?
The main objective of the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process is to remove irregularities in the voters’ list and make the list more pure, accurate and transparent. In this process fake voters are identified and their names are excluded. Often the same person’s name appears in different places or multiple times in the electoral roll; SIR plays an important role in deleting all such duplicate entries.
Recently this process was implemented in Bihar before assembly elections. At that time, the names of approximately 47 lakh fake voters were excluded from the voter list, the officials said.
