New security rules for WhatsApp
New rules of WhatsApp: Meta-powered messaging app WhatsApp is the most used platform in India. Millions of people use this app, but now users without an active SIM card may face problems. The WhatsApp account of such users may be closed, because the government is planning to make the security rules more stringent.
In fact, WhatsApp and other messaging apps will have to comply with the central government’s new Telecommunications Cyber Security Amendment Rules 2025. According to the new rules issued by the Department of Telecommunications, it will be mandatory for every WhatsApp account to have an active SIM card. The government has placed WhatsApp in a new TIUE category, which means it will have to follow rules to security and identity verification like telecom companies.
Mandatory SIM binding is the main basis of this new rule, which means that WhatsApp will have to ensure that the SIM card with which the account is created is active in the phone or not. If the SIM card is removed, replaced or turned off, WhatsApp will stop working. Additionally, WhatsApp Web will auto-log out every six hours, and users will have to scan a new QR code to log in again.
Telecom Department officials say this step will help in preventing cyber criminals from working anonymously. This will also help in preventing online fraud, fake identities and scams. Under the new rules, WhatsApp and other messaging platforms will have to implement this system within 90 days.
