The State Election Commission (SEC) has postponed elections for over 25 municipal corporations across several districts in Maharashtra due to significant irregularities found during the appeal process concerning rejected nomination papers. Originally scheduled for December 2, the voting in these areas will now take place on December 20. However, the elections for all other municipal councils and panchayats will proceed as planned, with polling set to occur from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM on Friday. Results for these bodies are expected to be announced on December 3.
Political Tensions in Palghar
The SEC's decision has come as a major setback for many candidates as the election campaign reaches its final stages. In Palghar, tensions escalated between two factions of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over allegations of a demand for ₹10 lakh for election tickets. According to police reports, Ashok Ambure, the former president of the city unit of the BJP, allegedly requested this amount from party worker Vaishali Chavan, who expressed her intention to contest the elections.
Supporters of Chavan have claimed that during a confrontation in the Lokmanya Nagar area, Ambure and his associates assaulted them with sticks. Despite attempts at mediation by local MP Hemant Sawara and the BJP's Palghar district president Bharat Rajput, both factions reported the incident to the police, accusing each other of serious offenses. Notably, Ambure's wife is contesting from Ward No. 14. A police officer confirmed that a non-cognizable report has been filed based on the complaints from both sides, and an investigation is underway.
