Supreme Court Retired Chief Justice Leads CBI Inquiry into Karur Stampede

In Karur, Tamil Nadu, a committee led by retired Chief Justice Ajay Rastogi is overseeing the investigation into a tragic stampede. This three-member panel includes IPS officer Sumit Sharan, who visited the CBI office in Karur on Monday. Alongside Sharan, Sonal V Mishra, the IG of Provisioning for CRPF in New Delhi, is also part of the committee. They are expected to review the evidence and materials collected during the investigation so far.


Ongoing Inquiries by CBI

Meanwhile, CBI officials in Karur are conducting interviews with the families of victims, injured individuals, ambulance drivers, police personnel, local administrators from the TVK party, and business owners from the Veluchamipuram area. Additionally, the CBI has questioned the families of 12 deceased individuals to gather statements regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident and the fatalities.


Background of the Incident

Previously, three members of the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), including a legal team and the regional coordinator from Trichy, appeared before the CBI for questioning related to the incident. The stampede occurred during a TVK rally on September 27, resulting in the deaths of approximately 41 people and injuring 110 others, with party leader Vijay present at the event. Following this tragedy, the Supreme Court mandated a CBI investigation to uncover the causes of the incident and identify those responsible.
