In the ongoing crackdown on illegal trade of codeine cough syrup and narcotics category drugs in UP, a case has been registered against 11 firms and operators in six districts in two days. The Drug Department of the Food Safety and Drug Administration has registered 98 cases so far.

A campaign is being run against illegal storage, buying, selling, distribution, illegal diversion etc. of codeine cough syrup and other NDPS category medicines. The syndicate involved in this work has also been exposed in the raid. It was found that many firms were using these medicines for non-medical purposes.

Banned drugs were being used for intoxication. Vanya Enterprises (Vishal Upadhyay), Akash Medical Store (Aakash Maurya), Manish Medical Store (Arun Sonkar), Shivam Medical Store (Shivam Kumar Maurya), Rajendra & Sons (Anshik Gupta), Dilip Medical Store (Dilip Kumar), Maa Kripa Medical Store (Satyam Kumar), Shivishk Pharma in Jaunpur, Bhadohi, Sonbhadra, Lakhimpur Kheri and Prayagraj. A case has been registered against (Vijay Gupta), Piyush Medical Agency (Saroj Kumar Mishra), MK Healthcare (Md. Saif) and Neeraj Kumar Dixit, who is running an unnamed medical store.

Of the 98 cases filed so far, 28 are in Varanasi, 16 in Jaunpur, 8 in Kanpur Nagar, 4 in Lakhimpur Kheri, 3 in Lucknow, and 39 in other districts.

The mastermind of cough syrup was arrested by Sonbhadra Police from Kolkata Airport on Sunday. He was planning to run away abroad. Mastermind Bhola Prasad Jaiswal is the father of drug mafia Shubham Jaiswal. Sonbhadra Police has filed a report in Kolkata for transit remand of the accused.
