In a shocking turn of events in Nanded, an 18-year-old woman has accused her father and brothers of murdering her 25-year-old boyfriend over their inter-caste relationship, demanding the death penalty for them. According to TOI, she also performed symbolic wedding rituals before her boyfriend’s funeral on Friday evening.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Aanchal Mamilwad said her family had violently opposed her relationship with Saksham Tate, solely because he belonged to the Buddhist community while her family is Hindu.
“My father kept telling me to end the relationship because he was a Buddhist. He even offered to let me marry anyone else, just not Saksham. They killed him brutally, but they lost. My lover won, even in death. I want my father and brothers to be hanged,” she said, breaking down in tears.
She added that the couple had planned to marry in a month and had already begun informal preparations.
Police told TOI that Tate was allegedly called to Juna Ganj locality on Thursday evening, where he was attacked by Aanchal’s father, Gajanan Mamilwad, her brothers Himesh and Sahil, and three others.
The attackers reportedly fired gunshots and later smashed his head with a stone slab, killing him on the spot. Other accused include Jayashri Thakur, Somash Lakhe, and Vedant.
While all adult suspects have been arrested, a minor has been sent to a correctional home by the Child Welfare Committee.
Authorities noted that both the victim and the accused had prior police records. Nanded Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prashant Shinde said an FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Indian Arms Act.
According to TOI, Aanchal claimed that Tate had recently been released from jail, and her family had been plotting against him for weeks. “They were threatening him continuously. As soon as he came out, they decided to finish him. They murdered him like an animal,” she alleged.
Eyewitnesses told TOI that the atmosphere at the funeral turned emotionally overwhelming when Aanchal entered the home where Tate’s body was kept. She reportedly applied haldi and kumkum as part of symbolic wedding rites, while relatives said turmeric was ceremonially applied to Tate in accordance with traditional customs.
Aanchal further said she had severed all ties with her family and planned to live permanently with Saksham’s mother. “I will stay with his mother for the rest of my life. They cannot separate us anymore,” she said.
Senior police officers confirmed that additional security forces have been deployed in the locality to avoid caste-based tensions. Investigations are ongoing to determine the sequence of events, recover the weapon used, and identify if more individuals were involved in the conspiracy. Aanchal’s detailed statement will also be recorded as part of the probe.
