Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor is once again at the center of internal tension in the Congress. His absence from the important meeting called by the party under the chairmanship of Sonia Gandhi to decide the strategy for the winter session of Parliament has raised many questions. However, Tharoor’s office clarified that he was visiting his 90-year-old mother in Kerala, and was returning to Delhi on a later flight.

It is noteworthy that due to local body elections, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also could not attend the meeting on Sunday (30 November). Tharoor had earlier also not attended the Congress meeting called on the SIR issue, at which time he had cited ‘ill health’ as ​​the reason. But the controversy increased when just a day before he was seen present at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s program and after this posts praising PM Modi appeared on his Instagram.

This is the reason why many party leaders have openly expressed their anger on Tharoor. According to a statement by the Congress leader, “Shashi Tharoor’s problem is that perhaps he does not know much about the country. If you think that Prime Minister Modi is doing a better job than the policies of the Congress, then why are you in the Congress? Just to remain an MP?”

Senior Congress leader Supriya Shrinet also criticized Tharoor, saying she could see “nothing to commend” in PM Modi’s speech. He said, “PM Modi attacked Congress, raised questions on journalism. What was commendable in such a speech? I don’t understand what Tharoor liked.”

Shashi Tharoor has been absent from several key Congress meetings in recent months, leading to discussions within the party over his ‘stance’. Especially after Operation Sindoor, Tharoor’s praise of PM Modi and sometimes showing soft attitude towards BJP is irritating many leaders.

Questions are also being raised regarding his absence whether Tharoor is taking a path different from the official line of the party, or it is just a matter of coincidence and personal reasons. At present, there has been no new response from Tharoor on this controversy, but this issue is again at the center of discussion in the internal equations of Congress.
