Samantha Ruth Prabhu , the heartthrob of South Indian Cinema, left her fans stunned in October of 2022 with an Instagram post revealing her diagnosis of myositis , a rare autoimmune disease . Sharing a hospital bed photographer, she wrote in her caption-"A few months back I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Myositis. I was hoping to share this after it had gone into remission. But it is taking a little longer than I hoped." This was the peak of her career, this vulnerability highlighted her strength, sparking awareness about a condition only a few knew. Samantha's struggle and openness turned personal struggle into inspiration for millions facing illnesses, such as her. Today, she tied the knot with director Raj Nidimoru in an intimate ceremony at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore, showing millions what resilience looks like. Understanding myositis and its health complications



Although there are millions of autoimmune diseases, and each is deadlier than the other. But this particular kind of disease, myositis, involves the immune system attacking healthy muscle tissues, leading to inflammation, pain and weakness in the body. It strikes pain in muscles shoulders, hips, thighs and neck. Symptoms of this rare condition include fatigue, muscle tenderness and difficult rising from chairs, climbing stairs or raising arms. Samantha called her experience "harrowing" in interviews, noting unpredictable good and bad days that tested her resilience.

How myositis affects the skin



Dermatomyositis features distinctive rashes: violet or dusky red on eyelids (heliotrope rash), knuckles (Gottron's papules), face, chest, elbows, knees, or back. Skin may thicken on hands or develop calcium deposits, especially in children. These visible signs aid diagnosis but signal widespread inflammation.

Complications

Untreated flares cause muscle atrophy, scarring, and permanent weakness of the body. Severe cases show respiratory failure or rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown in general terms). Viral-triggered myositis adds flu-like symptoms before muscle onset.

Onset and initial challenges



Symptoms emerged subtly for Samantha before formal diagnosis. In her podcast, she recalled: "I remember specifically the year before I had this problem... I woke up with this condition." Early signs mimicked overexertion: fatigue during shoots, inability to hold props, and rapid exhaustion. A critical incident during an action sequence led to fainting and a head concussion, forcing her to pause work: "I passed out." High-dose steroids caused side effects like skin pigmentation and texture changes, which she documented openly: "I had to take a lot of steroid shots. It really messed up my skin.

How did she manage this condition

Conventional treatments were okay, initially but they brought in heavy side effects, prompting Samantha to explore the world of functional medicine. She worked with her fitness coach Ryan Fernando, on customised physiotherapy, which included resistance bands, balance drills and progressive weights. But then came in the advanced therapies included ozone therapy for detoxification and circulation, adding to it the near-infrared sauna for pain relief and recovery. In her podcast Take 20, she explained her motivation: "The reason I wanted to do this podcast was because after the experience, the harrowing experience that I’ve been through... I’d rather want people to be safe than sorry."

We all know it, healthy diets, full of protein, fiber and good fats, are the cornerstone of healthy life. Samantha is on a strict diet that follows an autoimmune protocol eliminating gluten, dairy, sugar and processed foods to curb inflammation. According to her nutrition coach, Ryan Fernando, Samantha consumes staples including bone broth, fatty fish, berries and turmeric-ginger teas. This approach reduces cytokines and oxidative stress in the body, supporting muscle growth. Yoga and meditation are also daily things that she practices to keep her disease from flaring up.

Samantha launched Take 20 to demystify autoimmunity, interviewing experts on prevention and management. On World Health Day 2025, she shared: "My biggest flex? Not my bank account. My biomarkers," on a podcast with her fitness coach Ryan Fernando, celebrating optimized health markers. Skin recovery involved Pico laser and red light therapy post-steroids. Despite challenges, she advocated pacing: "Been through a lot of struggle but I think it was a final breaking of shackles."
