Parliament Winter Session: On Monday, the first day of the winter session of Parliament, members of opposition parties created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha. During this, strongly opposed the SIR and other matters being done by the Election Commission. This caused disruption in Question Hour and Zero Hour. The proceedings of the House, which started at 11 am, were adjourned first till 12 noon, then till 2 noon and then till December 2. The proceedings of the House lasted for 43 minutes on the first day.
Opposition MPs raised slogans like ‘Take back SIR,’ ‘Dictatorship will not be tolerated,’ and ‘Stop killing democracy.’ Earlier, as soon as the House proceedings began at 11 am, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informed the House about the demise of five deceased former members.
Tribute paid to deceased former members
Tributes were also paid to Bollywood star and former Lok Sabha members Dharmendra and Vijay Kumar Malhotra. The House observed silence for a while to pay tribute to its deceased former members. After this, the speaker expressed happiness over India’s victory in the Women’s Cricket World Cup and Women’s Kabaddi World Cup, congratulated the athletes and wished them good performance.
The ruckus started during the question hour itself
After all this, as soon as he directed to start the Question Hour, members of opposition parties including Congress and Samajwadi Party stood up from their seats demanding discussion on some issues. After some time many members came near the well.
Did Om Birla say anything?
Speaker Birla appealed to the opposition members to participate constructively and allow the proceedings of the House to proceed. He said that today is the first day of winter session. All members are expected to participate constructively. In the last session also I had urged you that we are the largest democracy in the world and we should establish good practices and traditions.
The Speaker said that he will give enough time to all the members to present their views. Systematic disruption of the House is not a good practice for democracy. Amid the uproar, BJP member Anurag Sharma asked supplementary questions to the Ken-Betwa river linking project, which were answered by Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav.
Despite all this, when the uproar continued, the Lok Sabha Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House at 11:19 am till 12 noon. After this, the House proceedings which started at 12 o’clock had to be adjourned again at 12:12 till 2 o’clock.
Sitharaman introduced two bills
Then the House proceedings, which started at 2 pm, were adjourned till 2 December at 2:12 pm. Meanwhile, Presiding Chairperson Sandhya Rai got the necessary documents tabled in the House. Amid sloganeering by opposition members, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced ‘Central Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill, 2025’ and ‘National Security Cess from Health Safety Bill, 2025’.
