Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephone conversation with the President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake to express his condolences on the loss of lives and devastation in Sri Lanka in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah. His Sri Lankan counterpart conveyed his deep gratitude for India’s timely and effective assistance.

PM Modi assured India’s continued support under Operation Sagar Bandhu, in line with Vision MAHASAGAR and as ‘First Responder’. he said India will continue to extend all necessary assistance in the coming days as Sri Lanka undertakes rehabilitation efforts, resumes public services, and works toward restoring livelihoods across the impacted regions.

As per official figures, Cyclone Ditwah has claimed over 355 lives in Sri Lanka, with 366 others left missing. The cyclone, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rains, brought the island nation's worst floods in a decade when it struck on Friday, setting off landslides in the hilly central region.


In a statement, weather authorities said, "It (the storm) is very likely to move northwards, away from the island, and weaken further."

Modi further conveyed that the people of India stand in firm solidarity and support with the people of Sri Lanka in this hour of need.

During the conversation, Dissanayake conveyed his deep gratitude for India’s assistance in the wake of the disaster and appreciated the swift deployment of rescue teams and relief material. He also conveyed the appreciation of the people of Sri Lanka for India’s timely and effective response efforts. The two leaders agreed to remain in close touch.

Cyclone Ditwah also brought heavy rain to Tamil Nadu over the weekend, where three people were killed in rain-related incidents, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, the state's minister for disaster management, said on Sunday.

The storm, 50 km (30 miles) off the coast of Chennai has already weakened into a "deep depression" and is expected to weaken further over the next 12 hours, weather officials said on Monday.

In a social media post, Modi said, "Spoke with President Dissanayake and conveyed heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of lives and the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. As a close and trusted friend, India stands firmly beside Sri Lanka and its people in this difficult hour."

"India will continue to extend all necessary support under the ongoing Operation Sagar Bandhu for relief and rescue efforts and will stand with Sri Lanka in the days ahead as it undertakes rehabilitation and recovery," he added.
