Greece has been named the world’s best retirement destination for 2026, according to the Annual Global Retirement Index report by International Living. As per the report, the country now leads globally for health care, cost of housing, and climate, factors that shaped this year’s rankings.
International Living said Greece has moved ahead of long-favourite Portugal and Spain. Jennifer Stevens, the executive editor of International Living, said in a statement, “Greece now offers what many are seeking, a beautiful, welcoming, and affordable European base with accessible residency options and a lifestyle that feels rich in every sense.” She also said this is a country “where your money stretches, and your days feel full.”
Why Greece leads the 2026 index
The ranking evaluates destinations using expert input and data across categories such as visas, cost of living, integration, health care, and housing. This is the first time Greece has taken the top position.
International Living noted that private health care remains affordable. Its Greece correspondent, Leena Horner, said her private health care “has been consistently good” and costs her and her husband EUR 250 a month. The release also highlighted that retirees can rent seaside homes for EUR 600 to EUR 1,000 a month. Weather conditions—hot, dry summers and relatively mild winters—remain a draw for those looking for predictable year-round living.

Residency pathways also played a role. Greece’s Golden Visa programme continues to offer one of Europe’s more accessible routes to long-term residence and citizenship.
