Paush Maas Rules: According to religious beliefs, Sun God has special importance in the month of Paush. At this time the Sun moves towards Dakshinayan and the effect of winter increases. It is said that during this period the energy of the Gods is in a state of rest, hence there is a possibility of reduction in the results of auspicious works. For this reason, auspicious functions like marriage, house warming or mundan are put on hold. Many auspicious activities are considered prohibited during this entire month, hence it is considered a special month from astrological and religious point of view.
Paush month 2025, when till when?
According to the calendar, the month of Pausha is starting on 5th December 2025, Friday and will end on 3rd January 2026, Saturday.
Why are auspicious works prohibited in the month of Pausha?
The main religious and astrological reason behind not doing auspicious work in the month of Paush is 'Kharmas'.
Sun's entry into Sagittarius (Dhanu Sankranti): At the beginning of Paush month, Sun God changes his zodiac sign and enters Sagittarius. This transit of the Sun is called Dhanu Sankranti, and the entire time the Sun remains in Sagittarius is known as Kharmas or Malmas.
Reduction in sun effect: According to astrological beliefs, when the Sun enters the sign of Jupiter (lord of Sagittarius), its influence reduces to some extent. It is considered necessary for the Sun to be strong for the success and auspicious results of any auspicious work.
Decrease in the results of auspicious actions: It is believed that auspicious works done during Kharmas period do not yield auspicious results or face obstacles. Therefore, important tasks like marriage, house warming, mundan are postponed during this period.
Rest period of Gods: According to some beliefs, Dakshinayan period (in which Pausha month falls) is considered a period of rest for the gods, hence it is not considered appropriate to do auspicious works at this time.
Don't do this auspicious work even by mistake!
According to religious beliefs, doing these auspicious works during the period of Kharmas (Paush month) is considered prohibited.
Marriage: This is the most important work which is not done in the month of Pausha. It is believed that marriages done during this period lack happiness, prosperity and sweetness in married life.
Home Entrance: Entering a new house or starting construction of a house is also prohibited during this period.
Mundan Sanskar: The Mundan Sanskar of children is also not performed at this time.
Janeu Sanskar (Upveet Sanskar): This important ritual is also not performed in Kharmas.
Start of new business/work: Starting any new big work, new business or starting any new big project is also considered prohibited.
Purchase of land/vehicle: Some people also postpone the purchase of a new vehicle or new property during this period.
