More than 800 Singaporeans have returned home safely from the tourist city of Hat Yai in Thailand which was hard hit by deadly flooding.

In a Facebook post on Dec. 1, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said 822 Singaporeans had been repatriated and thanked the Thai government, the Royal Thai Armed Forces and volunteers for their swift support, which enabled Singapore to assist its citizens effectively, The Straits Times reported.

The Thai government said more than 1,800 foreign tourists had been rescued and assisted in flood-stricken southern Thailand, Bangkok Post reported.

Tourism and Sports Minister Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn said there were no new reports of tourists stranded in flood-hit areas, and that transport networks had largely been restored.

Torrential rain and water levels began to recede on Nov. 27 in southern Thailand, allowing evacuation teams to speed up efforts as vans and military trucks were able to reach stranded people and bring foreign tourists to relief centers or the airport.

The floods have affected more than 980,000 homes and over 2.7 million people in Thailand.

At least 176 people in southern Thailand were killed, the authorities said on Dec. 1.
